Calcium chloride is a chemical composed of chlorine and calcium elements, chemical formula CaCl2, slightly bitter. It is a typical ionic halide, white, hard fragments or particles at room temperature. Its common applications include saltwater used in refrigeration equipment, road thaw agent and desiccant.

1, used as a multi-purpose desiccant, such as nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, hydrogen chloride, sulfur dioxide and other gas drying. Used as dehydrating agent in the production of alcohols, esters, ethers and acrylic resins. Calcium chloride aqueous solution is an important refrigerant for refrigerating machine and ice making. It can accelerate the hardening of concrete and increase the cold resistance of building mortar. It is an excellent antifreeze for building. Used as port defogging agent and road dust collector, fabric fire retardant. Used as protective agent and refining agent in aluminum and magnesium metallurgy. It is a precipitant for the production of lake pigments. Used for deinking waste paper processing. It is the raw material for calcium salt production.

Calcium chloride lowers the freezing point of water. Spreading calcium chloride hydrate on roads can prevent freezing and de-icing snow, but the salt water from melting snow and ice can damage soil and vegetation along roads and deteriorate pavement concrete.
Calcium chloride solution can also be mixed with dry ice to prepare a cryogenic cooling bath. Add the dry ice rods to the brine solution in batches until ice blocks appear in the system. Different kinds and concentrations of salt solution can maintain the stable temperature of the cooling bath will be different. Common salt and calcium chloride as raw materials, by adjusting the concentration to obtain the required temperature, not only because the calcium chloride tap cheaply, and because the eutectic temperature of the calcium chloride solution (that is, the solution for the temperature of the formation of granular ice sand son) is quite low, can reach 51.0 ℃, which makes the adjustable temperature ranges from 0 ℃ to – 51 ℃. In this case, the temperature is also relatively stable.

Hydrated calcium chloride solid can be used as phase change energy storage material. For example, because the melting point of calcium chloride hexahydrate is 30℃, the melting heat (that is, the heat absorbed in the process of the material from the solid phase to the liquid phase at the same temperature) reaches 190 kJ/mol, so it can be used as a medium-low temperature for industrial waste heat recovery, solar radiation heat absorption and utilization, but it is similar to all inorganic hydrated salt phase change materials. There is a serious problem of supercooling (up to 20°C), which needs to be overcome by adding nucleating agent.
Calcium chloride in concrete to help speed up the initial setting effect, but chloride ions will cause corrosion of steel, so calcium chloride can not be used in reinforced concrete. Anhydrous calcium chloride can provide a certain degree of moisture to concrete because of its moisture absorption.
Calcium chloride is also an additive in plastics and fire extinguishers, as a filter aid in wastewater treatment, as an additive in blast furnace to control the aggregation and adhesion of raw materials so as to avoid the settlement of the charge, in fabric softener plays the role of diluent.
The dissolving and exothermic nature of calcium chloride makes it useful in self-heating cans and heating pads.
In the petroleum industry, calcium chloride is used to increase the density of solid-free saline and can also be added to the aqueous phase of emulsified drilling fluids to inhibit clay swelling. As a flux in the Davy process of electrolytic melting of sodium chloride to produce sodium metal as a flux to reduce the melting point. Calcium chloride, which is used as a component in ceramics, makes clay particles suspended in solution, making them easier to use in grouting.
